Not Your Fathers Solar Panel

Boston Real Estate Blog - Old Solar PanelsI’m a big fan of solar panels, but I hate how these ones look. They just don’t blend well with the existing roof structure, not to mention void the warranty of the roof when you puncture it to bolt in these clunky panels.

With gas prices going through the roof (haha) solar panels have again become a beacon of light (couldn’t help it). In the 70’s and earlier 80’s people were strapping them to their roofs to save on energy bills. Unfortunately solar panels never caught on.

Lets be honest they were ugly as all can be. Aesthetically not even close to pleasing, so as oil and gas prices stabilized they fell to the wayside.

Boston Real Estate Blog - New Solar PanelsNot so anymore! New technology has emerged, thankfully, that has turned roofing tiles into solar panels. They blend nicely into existing and new construction homes alike and honestly aren’t that noticeable.

So why aren’t they popping up around New England? If you know of anyone who is using these products please email me. I’d love to show case them here on the blog.

I’m pretty sure New Englanders would love to save some money on their Oil and Gas bills. Not to mention the tax breaks involved for the builders and homeowners.

  1. Hurrah for forward-thinking homeowners, landlords and builders!

As a former resident of the wild outback (off the grid in every way!) I’ve had first-hand experience with the efficacy of solar-electric generation, albeit the big, bulky pannels. Solar-electric generation is easy, and has indeed been made more user-friendly with the advent of solar roofing (see http://bostonrealestateblog.com/ for more information).

I look forward to seeing more and more solar-electric roofs in the very near future. Fact is, the aesthetic of solar roofing can’t be overstated, and the value to the homeowner is beyond compare, and the cost can be readily amortized, well within the lifespan of the installation.

Maybe some readers have examples of some local installatons? I’d love to see them!
